“PC Culture” Picks More Targets From Adult Animation: “Willie” From “The Simpsons” ; “Nicholas” From “Bob’s Burgers”

Here we go.

This week, Indian-American producer Adi Shankar decided to weight in on The Problem with Apu debate that Bill Maher has already decimated, but now another famous character from The Simpsons may be getting jeers of his own…”Groundskeeper Willie”.

That’s right, the Dan Castellaneta-voiced character is yet another character from The Simpsons receiving the PC Culture-skewed microscope. Fortunately, The Sun ran a story where they interviewed noted Scotsmen and as it turns out, Willie is almost a national hero with Glasgow and Aberdeen both vying for the place of origins for the long-running character. So if you kids are scoring at home, the Scots have a way better sense of humor about things than some of our homemade social justice warriors.

A good example of this, Bob’s Burgers producer Loren Bouchard just had to answer to a letter from a concerned fan saying that the show’s latest episode “missed the mark” on presenting a silly character named “Nicholas” with a service dog. Loren did a great job of being diplomatic but at the end of the day, it’s just another example of people taking animated comedies far more serious in which they are intended.

Our Take

Bob’s Burgers and The Simpsons are HUGE animated franchises with legions of fans all over the world, but only in America does there seem to be an issue with freedom of speech and art expression. Go figure. Personally, my favorite letter of the week stems from the reposting of the late Barbara Bush’s note to the producers of The Simpsons.
