English Dub Review: Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 “Out of the Forest of Memories”

With dead memories in my heart

Overview (Spoilers Below)

On this week’s episode, following the attempted coup from last week, the Yamato drops by a satellite that used to be managed by the Gamilians. This station features a control center that unlocks a gateway that allows the Yamato the path to their target destination, but not before we get some flashbacks of Mamoru and Sanada, the latter of whom nearly perishes in opening the gate.Fortunately, everyone makes it through, but the Gamilian bigwigs might have a few shuffles in management in the works.

Our Take

One of the coolest things about this show, it’s scale, and it’s on an epic proportion. Big HUGE ships that fill up the screen are a sight to behold, and yes we just spent 22 minutes waiting for a gate to open, but when you sit back and look at all the backgrounds, you can’t help but see your jaw drop to the floor. It’s a terrifying universe, and Star Blazers does a stellar job of making it as Alien-meets the Third Reich as much as possible, and we get the benefit. Throw in a few left turns in terms of the overall plot of the series, and you’ve got a strong episode.
