English Dub Review: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 “The Wolf of Subspace”

And we’re the sheep.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

The Yamato is damaged pretty bad from their attack at the hands of the Gamilian last week and the enemy’s submarine is on the prowl looking for the leftovers. As a result, the Yamato has to hide in an asteroid long enough until the Gamilian ship is gone, but eventually, someone comes up with a stupid idea to alert the Gamilians anyway. Fortunately, Kodai takes a Sea Gull and is able to locate the source of the Gamilians and some top-notch space flying is able to thwart incoming torpedoes long enough for the Yamato to escape without taking too much else damage.

Meanwhile, Okita suffers an ailment and is almost incapacitated in the infirmary. The ship’s captain is in high spirits, but this appears to be the beginning of the end for the respected leader.

Our Take

The action sequences were excellent, and it’s sometimes easy to forget that the Yamato is a big ass Titanic-like ship floating in the air with all of the acrobatic stuff we see the ship doing. Okita’s ailment adds another exciting arc to the series that is now officially half-way through. I’m loving the additional leadership and assertiveness that Kodai is taking in helping lead to mankind’s survival. He seemed to be rather susceptible earlier in the season, but now it looks like he’s ready to stick a whole Sea Gull up the asses of the Gamilian. We’ll see if he follows through with that or if Kodai reverts back to further investigating possible crimes committed by Earth.
