Comics Review: Steven Universe #12

The first Steven Universe comic of 2018, but is it worth getting?

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

The comic begins as Connie voices her stress & anxiety over a school test she’s about to take that’s of great concern, but Steven not wanting to see her in such a troubled state, offers Connie a slumber party at his place to help her find some momentary escapism. What comes next is both an interesting & comedic moment as Steven tries to explain how slumber parties work to the Gems and how they differentiate from other parties. When the slumber party later begins, everything seems pleasant at first, But Pearl while well-intentioned in her meticulous methods of doing everything to the letter, starts to annoy everyone with her overly “neat-freak” attitude while Amethyst tries to point out how this is supposed to be a fun time and how Pearl is indirectly turning this into a “Scheduled day-plan”.

Near the end of Story, As they try to have fun, an argument almost happens oncemore between Pearl & Amethyst until Garnet breaks the ice with a pillow fight which leads to the best moment in this comic that must be seen to experience as the next 5 pages capture a childlike sense of wonder which makes Pearl & Amethyst eventually apologize to one another for their previous behavior until they all call it a night. The next morning, Connie gets picked up by her Dad, and the comic ends on a happy note as the Gems learn to relax a little themselves with Garnet saying “Balance is key”.

Our Take

With the ongoing joint-efforts of Grace Kraft’s writing and Rii Abrego’s colorful art style that’s expertly replicated from the show, Kaboom entertainment’s current run is still going strong with stories that have potential to be animated scripts, even if they pass for filler/lost episodes. With the way this was written, Not to mention Amethyst is wearing a white muscle shirt, this could’ve passed for a Season 4-5 episode since this is her current design on the show at the time of this review.

You’d think with all the years the Gems have lived on earth, a slumber party wouldn’t be such a foreign concept to them. But at least near the end of the story, It turned out to be a fun experience for everyone involved.
