Review: Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man VS. The Sinister 6 “Strange Little Halloween”

Is this week’s episode a good warm-up for the Dr. Strange movie??

Spoilers Below

Baron Mordo is causing a lighting storm to turn all of the trick-or-treating kids into mutated horrors. To help stop him, Spider-Man recruits Dr. Strange and Ant-Man so that they can get to the quantum realm of magic and stop Mordo once-and-for-all. Unfortunately, Mordo is teamed up with terrifying monster versions of Marvel’s most notorious villains.

The heroes end up destroying the big monster villains, but now Strange wants to get Mordo back to NYC. They do just that, but it doesn’t appear to slow down Mordo that much. Eventually, Strange’s former student turns into a giant and starts using a spell to turn NYC into an imaginary war-zone. To counteract this, Spider-Man conjures up an idea for everyone to use their imaginations to defeat Mordo. At the end, everyone goes trick-or-treating, much to the chagrin of Nova.

Our Take

I think it’s interesting that on the same month that the Dr. Strange movie is coming out, Baron Mordo is a white guy in the animated TV shows and in the film Mordo is played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. I also don’t quite understand why when the heroes in the animated shows have a night off, they are all still in full costume?

In any event, this week’s episode started off like shit, but ended OK. I couldn’t quite understand some of the ancillary powers of Ant-Man when he was battling Mordo in the quantum realm, and Spider-Man’s web shooters just come off as lame. But, when we switched to the NYC battle, I thought the episode picked up quite a bit in the quality department and had some pretty cool action sequences. Not exactly a treat, but still better than candy corn.
