Review: Steven Universe – “Super Watermelon Island”

I have no idea what I just watched.

Spoilers Below

The first of the “In Too Deep” episodes begins on an island of watermelon people. Yes, the entire island is inhabited by people made of watermelon. After we watch them for awhile, we are snapped back to reality with Steven and the Gems. It turns out that Steven, using his astral projection power, took over a watermelon person while he was napping. During this journey, he found out that Malachite, the fusion of Lapis Lazuli and Jasper, has risen from the ocean, causing earthquakes. Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl fuse together to form Alexandrite in order to defeat her. However, they are still not powerful enough. They need the help of the watermelon people. Steven once more takes over a watermelon person and convinces the rest of the tribe to join the fight. Together, Alexandrite and the watermelon people separate Lapis and Jasper. Just as they begin celebrating, another earthquake breaks apart the ground, sliding Jasper into a crevice. The Gems, back in their original forms, convince Steven to wake up and get Peridot to help them save the planet.

While Steven Universe is an unusual show, it isn’t usually that crazy. Every time they showed the watermelon people, I got even more confused. Will there be more fruit people in the future? How do these people even exist? I would love to get an explanation but I doubt that I’ll ever get one. At least the fight with Malachite was awesome and I have this earthquake problem to look forward to. Just no more fruit people, please.
