Review: American Dad! “Daesong Heavy Industries II: Return to Innocence” (S13Ep16)

Best show of the year?

Spoilers Below

Tonight’s new American Dad! episode was a continuation of last week’s cliffhanger episode “Daesong Heavy Industries”, and is entitled “Daesong Heavy Industries II: Return to Innocence”.

The storyline picks up after Stan questions his faith, thinks a flood is coming, and wants to become a modern day Noah. The entire Smith family is aboard the Daesong Heavy Industries ship, with animals, and natural gas.

There’s a hilarious musical number by Roger in the beginning, just before disaster strikes and the family pairs apart and each pair goes their separate ways. Stan and Francine are on an island, Roger and Steve are stranded at sea, and Jeff and Hayley have a funny turn of events too– with a great throwback to my favorite American Dad! episode “Killer Vacation”!

This entire 2-episode arc really does harken back to early American Dad! episodes– such a cool oldschool feel, and seriously funny laugh-out-loud jokes. Compared to a moderately funny Family Guy this week, a super bland Simpsons, and hell, a CANCELED Bordertown, how did FOX give up on this show??

But really, I’m glad American Dad! went to TBS. As gimmicky as I felt their early attempts to be “edgy” were, they can definitely get away with some amazingly funny stuff now.

“Daesong Heavy Industries II” is very much a testament to how good American Dad! still is– it had a nice, family-oriented story but also raunchy humor– something that’s not easy to pull off. And the episode’s ending! Wow– so good. I’m always dreading shows to end on a lame note.

Simpsons tries the touching stuff, often at the expense of comedy. But I’m glad to say, this stellar two-part American Dad! hit it out of the park this week.
