BUBBLE CAN Review: Night Sweats “Breaking News”

After a bit of a break, Night Sweats returned last night with a brand new episode. The episode itself wasn’t all that was new either, because three out of the four cartoons we got last night were entirely new. This isn’t the first time this season that we’ve seen a turnover of cartoons and it’s always a little bittersweet because of course, you’re excited to check out some new ideas and creations, but at the same time, you always want more of what you already like. So how was this new episode? Read on to find out!

In “Breaking News” Bart and Chris are interrupted by a reporter with a breaking news story. Also featured: “Phil M.D.;” “Don’t Feed the Humans;” “Goodwin vs. Badwin;” and “Terrificland.”

The first of the animated shorts in this episode is “Phil M.D”. This is a new short and with it’s allotted time, I think it did an excellent job introducing us to this morally corrupt doctor named Phil. We met him, got to know him, introduced a story that will probably tie the series together, we met his dopey, well-meaning friend, Dale. A lot happened, but it didn’t feel rushed. Like “Don’t Feed The Humans”, this short feels like one that could sustain its own half-hour show every week.

Speaking of “Don’t Feed the Humans”, it was the only short to continue on into this next phase of the season. This week was pretty interesting. We got to visit a few unique settings. In a cartoon that sometimes feels very cramped, there was a sense of adventure to this episode. Relationships were developed, there was even a plot twist that was actually pretty intriguing also.

The third cartoon was Goodwin vs. Badwin. This is another new cartoon for the show. It was very short, pretty simple, but I think it’s setting up something neat.

Finally, there was Terrificland. Another new cartoon, but this one I wasn’t particularly fond of. It sort of felt like Rick and Morty meet Adventure Time. Sounds great on paper, but in practice, it came across very convoluted. There were some fun character moments but beyond that, it wasn’t that interesting of a watch, unfortunately.

Overall, I think there is some cool new stuff to see here. I do miss Crack Duck already, but I’m excited to see more of these also. The live-action stuff this week was pretty funny. Chris and Bart were feuding with a news network that inexplicably interrupted the show while they tried to give out their Cartoon Award. So, another good episode for Night Sweats. Not perfect, but certainly a fun watch.
