Shorts Review: Mickey Mouse – “Feliz Cumpleanos”

Mickey_Mouse

It’s Mickey’s birthday! All of his friends have gathered together to celebrate. Even The Three Caballeros came to play music for him. Minnie brings out Mickey’s birthday cake as everyone sings a lovely birthday song. The party is ruined when the pinata bandits show up. They attack Mickey and scare his friends. But when they shove his face into the cake his beloved Minnie made him, Mickey loses it. He throws on a blindfold, grabs a broken table leg, and starts destroying the pinata gang. The leader is the last pinata left. He begs for his life and, at first, Mickey lets him go. When the pinata leader tries to attack Mickey again, he throws his table leg, defeating the pinatas once and for all. Everyone gets back to partying, only this time there is an abundance of candy for everyone to enjoy.

This episode was broadcast entirely in Spanish. I think this may be the first all-Spanish episode of the series. Since I speak some Spanish, I was able to understand bits and pieces of what the characters were saying. I’m not sure if that changes my enjoyment of the episode or if I would have hated it if I didn’t understand what was going on. Though, in fairness, there have been other foreign language episodes that I didn’t understand the words but I still loved. In this particular case, I loved that the pinatas were the bad guys and Mickey had to defeat them. It felt a bit like a Spanish western movie. This may be my new favorite episode.
