NBC developing Kirby Buckets clone “Donuthead”?

Deadline.com has announced that NBC is developing a series called Donuthead that is said to be a live-action/animated hybrid similar to ABC’s Imaginary Friend.

NBC has put in development Donuthead, a single-camera comedy set in the world of an anxiety-ridden 11-year old boy and his single mother. The series, written by Irene Mecchi (Brave, The Lion King) and Bridget Terry will feature a unique visual style to illustrate this kid’s one-of-a-kind imagination.

You guys every hear of a show called Kirby Buckets? It’s a series about a kid with a wild imagination which is then illustrated into cartoons via Titmouse. It sounds like NBC is doing something VERY similar, but maybe being a major network the series won’t be as family friendly.

NBC has flirted in the past with animated projects, but hasn’t had the balls to follow through other than with Christmas specials. It will be interesting to see if this could change given the current rush of live-action/animated hybrids coming to broadcast networks. With Adam Scott producing, one would hope this is certainly the case.
