Review: Wander Over Yonder “The Battle Royale”

Wander buys a candy ring and spreads rumors that it makes whomever wears it the most powerful in the galaxy. Obviously all of the villains go after it which leads to a massive battle royale. Wander knows that Dominator is a girl, so the reason behind all of this is to have both her and Lord Hater married. A rather exciting climb up the proverbial showcases a bunch of the villains that this show has mustered in only two short seasons, and we end up with the Black Cube nearly taking the ring, but it becomes a showdown between Hater and Dominator. This is exactly what Wander wanted, but now he’s gotta break the secret and get these two to dig each other.

The battle between Sylvia and Peepers goes to a draw, but the battle between Dominator and Hater is kinda up in the air now because eventually Hater does find out who he is dealing with and now he’s smitten. Will the two evil doers end up together?

Our Take

By far the best episode of Wander of the season, and it setups a rather major arc for the foreseeable future. The art direction for the fights was as good as anything you’d see out of Japan, and there were so many funny moments laden throughout. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be laughing about Wander throwing cinnamon in Hater’s eyes for the next day or two, and even Dominator’s pretty funny. Seriously, imagine if a 19-year old girl decided to forego college and snag the keys to a huge machine and ship, and you have an idea of this girl’s personality.

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I’m starting to think that “The Black Cube” episode upcoming was a tad spoiled by this one, but overall this one is solid. I actually much prefer the 30-minute varieties of this series to the 12-minute ones, so I’m looking forward to more.
