Jason Segel Talks the Real Origin of the Dracula Puppet Musical from ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’

Dracula Musical

Believe it or not, it has been over seven years since Forgetting Sarah Marshall was released.

Although the writing was brilliant throughout, the film’s star and screenwriter, Jason Segel, showed off his creative chops best when the audience was treated to a couple scenes from his character’s fictional Dracula musical.

Turns out, A Taste for Love isn’t just a plot detail, but was once meant to be an actual live show.

“I was going through this slow period, and at this time I was smoking a lot of pot, if we’re going to be honest about it,” Segel said at the New Yorker Festival on Saturday. “And I came up with the conclusion that the way I was going to jump-start my career was with a lavish Dracula puppet musical. I wrote the Dracula musical alone in my apartment and I recorded it.”

After penning the show’s big number, “Dracula’s Lament,” he shared it with friend and frequent collaborator Judd Apatow.

“I then drove to Judd’s house with a CD that I burned for him,” Segel continued. “I played it for him. I remember it got to the end of the song, and Judd reached over and pushed pause and stopped it. And he said, you can’t play that for anybody.

Eventually it was incorporated into Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the world got to witness this true masterpiece. As for the prospects of a full musical, Segel said, “People ask me all the time. I feel like it’s much better in short form where you’re allowed to think it’s good.”

Yeah, but if we saw the whole thing, we might think it’s great.
