Op-Ed: Seth MacFarlane should bring back ‘Family Guy’

No that title isn’t a typo. Rather, I think that’s the mission statement that Seth MacFarlane needs to adhere to moving forward from a Ted 2 opening that was less than enthralling. Will the sequel to the biggest R-rated animated comedy of all-time be profitable? Yes. To the level of the original? Nowhere near.

To be perfectly honest, I think a lot of the non-success of Ted 2 has to do with people just simply being tired of Seth MacFarlane content. Don’t get me wrong, Seth MacFarlane an outstanding talent that can draw, voice, sing, act, and direct with the best of them. However, if drugs have taught me anything, it’s that too much of a good thing is a bad thing, and as such I think Seth needs to order a reboot in his career and I know just the way he can do it..

Bring back Family Guy. I know what you’re thinking…”Isn’t Family Guy on the air still?” Yep…it is. But, am I the only one who has noticed that the soul of Family Guy has been almost non-existent since the premier of Ted? That’s not to blame the directorial effort of Seth MacFarlane…Ted is a classic that will forever be regarded as the first in successfully merging live-action with animated comedy (Paul was close, but the technology for Ted was better). But, there’s no arguing that ever since Seth MacFarlane took himself off of Family Guy, that the show has deteriorated to the point of non-recognizable. Anyone that catches reruns of the show during the course of the week can certainly attest to this. Watch a TBS marathon of Family Guy consisting of episodes from Seasons 10 to anything earlier and compare that to the newer episodes that you can certainly catch on Sunday Nights on FOX or on Hulu.com. There just is something missing and the main ingredient is obvious…Seth MacFarlane.

Seth needs to more or less reboot his career, and Family Guy is in need of its original producer. The show lacks the quick-wit, the jokes that hit you from behind, the gags that made celebrities blush. The Seth of old would have made us beg for his jokes on what’s going down with Trump’s presidency or would have skewered hosts of the Academy Awards, not become one. Ted 2 and recent seasons of Family Guy have shown that Seth needs to put himself in an environment where he is absent from viewers’ eyes and do what he came to this Earth to do…make people laugh. Seth, take five years, go back to making Family Guy a good show again. Do that, and people will be begging to see more.
