Review: Tokyo Ghoul √A “Last Rain”

TG ep 10

You know, it’s funny how things play out. Going through the first 22 minutes and 30 seconds of “Last Rain,” I thought I had this review planned. I was going to bitch about how this battle could have been massive, and how I have lost that something that could have been emotionally invested in Tokyo Ghoul with. Well, Owl showing his final form in the last few seconds kind of changed the events of my entire review.

I felt like most of “Last Rain” was really rushed, where almost ever single second of the episode was nothing but action. The few seconds where they tried to convey plot and backstory just fell flat, especially with the backstory of Koma and Irimi as they’re fighting the CCG, as well as Touka trying to be some sort of relevant. Don’t worry, that fell flat too. Speaking of Touka, where’s her brother, Ayato? Since the raid on the prison, he hasn’t been seen. I’m expecting him to show up in the next two weeks, and just lay waste to people.

We have two episodes left for the season, yet there are entirely way too many loose threads that haven’t been explained. Is there any reason as to why Kaneki is back on the site of Anteiku? Does Touka still have powers? Where’s Ayato? Is there a point where Juuzou will have a breakdown? I’m not even sure if the writers have addressed any of this. Those are just the three questions I had right off the top of my head. I’m sure if I actually dig, I can find even more. That’s the sign of bad writing. Unfortunately, it seems like the plot just took a break for the final four episodes of the season while all of the action that’s been missing takes over. I guess we really can’t have our cake and eat it too.
