Review: Death Parade “Death March”

DP ep 6

There always seems to be a theme of sorts when it comes to the DubbleTalk block. Death Parade‘s “Death March” is such a departure from what we have seen so far. Even during “Death Reverse,” everything revolved around the game of chance the two dead people were playing. The only game that was played between Nona and a new character, Oculus. Oculus is pretty much God. Anyway, the basis of “Death March” was to show the process of Quin’s Memory Test.

What “Death March” did do was expand the cast of characters even more, and give us a glimpse into memory process that Quindecim has so the people have no memories when they show up. We see Clavis again, who actually has a speaking role this week. The major additions to the Quindecim team is Oculus, Ginti, and Castra. Ginti is an arbiter, who used to work under Nona, and Castra. Castra, as of now, doesn’t do much except sit and literally watch the world.

I find episodes where Death Parade expands on itself a lot more enjoyable than the normal game episodes. That’s not to say that they aren’t enjoyable, but it’s different from what we get normally. I can dig this, mostly because outside of the Raven-Haired Girl and Decim, there are only two other characters, and they change from game to game. When the writers actually show the meat of what goes on at Quindecim, and what seems to be the other bars inside of Quindecim, it goes to show that this isn’t going to be a one-trick pony.

“Death March” was a different episode. It was the best episode of Death Parade thus far, and definitely better than “Death Reverse” when comparing similar episodes. There is a lot of places where Death Parade could have faltered, but the writing and the pacing of how the heirarchy of Quindecim works is slowly coming into place. Death Parade doesn’t blow it’s wad from the onset, and it’s been a fun, slow burn so far.
