Review: Jack and Triumph ”Triumph Comes Home”

It doesn’t take long, but we learn all about Jack and Triumph’s history up until this point. Turns out, the duo used to be part of a hit sitcom. Unfortunately, as stars from shows like Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper, Family Matters, and Cheers have shown us, just because you hit it big doesn’t mean you stay big. That’s exactly what happened to our heroes Jack and Triumph, both of whom had lives that spiraled out of control due to drug use, banging hookers, and giving out hand jobs for cash. The two clean up after they live with one of the former cast members named June. But, don’t let her grandma looks fool you, June acts like a CUNT and she goes behind Jack’s back and abandons Triumph in the woods. Years later, Triumph would return with Michael Winslow in tow which allows Jack and Triumph to reconnect just like old times. As un-luck would have it, as soon as their backs are turned, Michael Winslow ends up robbing June’s house clean, and leaves a ransom note for the return of the house furniture. Strapped for cash, Jack and Triumph decide to go to a local con and sell autographs until they make enough money to get their furniture back.

After the break, Jack and Triumph head to New York Comic Con where they run a table that does surprisingly well after some promotional efforts. Afterwards, we find out that Triumph was in on Winslow robbing June this whole time as he’s been selling the furniture outside Comic Con and making a profit this whole time. With the new revenue, the guys purchase a whole bunch of new furniture for June by the time she wakes up from her coma.

This show is painfully funny. It’s one-part sitcom, one-part Triumph’s ‘man-on-the-street’ bits, and every part of what you would expect from a show coming from Robert Smigel. Jack McBrayer may seem innocent, but he slips one-liners in every chance he gets. Both June and Michael Winslow had my side splitting, especially Winslow and the fake-weapon showdown with Jack leaving Triumph as the only rational one of THAT group. I was literally on my floor holding my stomach at that entire scene.

Not surprisingly, Triumph is the comedic star of this show. His jokes at New York Comic Con with Hulk Hogan and whatever that internet dude’s name is, gives you the type of material that helped put Triumph on the map. But, he also CRUSHES June and Michael Winslow with jokes, I mean absolutely skewers the two. The show absolutely exhibits the talented names in the opening credits, Dino Stamatoupolos, Conan O’Brien, Rob Smigel, and a whole host of others almost to perfection. It’s ironic that this episode is called ”Triumph Comes Home”, because he is absolutely at home on Adult Swim.
