Straight Out of ‘The Simpsons,’ a Grease Thief is on the Loose

Ah yes, another instance of the plot of a Simpsons episode coming to life before our very eyes.

Apparently, thousands of pounds of used cooking oil have been stolen in the past week from restaurants in the Rochester, Minnesota area, according to local police and a story in the Post-Bulletin.

Midwest Grease, who buys the oil from eateries and sells it to be recycled, reported the slick theft.

As anyone who has seen the 1998 “Lard of the Dance” Simpsons (S10E1) can attest to, used grease can be quite valuable. In that episode, Homer attempted this same venture, eventually getting thwarted in the attempted theft of Groundskeeper Willie’s “retirement grease.”

To give you an idea of the market for the fat, a company called Restaurant Technologies Inc. built their $375 million business from recycled oil, and the ever-increasing rise of bio-diesel fuel has raised the price of old grease considerably.

With all this Simpsons imitation, the next thing you know, a school gymnasium floor will become inconceivably warped after being exposed to tons of water. Oh wait, that already happened.
