Blu-Ray Prize Review: Rick and Morty Season One

For the last several years, Robot Chicken has pretty much dominated the space in releasing original animated comedies on DVD and/or Blu-ray. Shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park have tapered off some support of their home releases as their creators and producers go on to produce other projects. Most home releases for Adult Swim shows have gone the way of the dinosaur, and the few shows that DO release DVDs, usually don’t give you much in terms of special features.

From 2013 thru 2014, Adult Swim had been airing a masterpiece for animated television in Rick and Morty. As we get to the tail end of 2014, Rick and Morty has reinvented the home release for animated comedies. For starters, you get all eleven episodes of glorious Rick and Morty, with animatics and episode commentaries on EACH uncensored episode. We’ll get into special features in a bit, but the first thing you should do after you purchase the Blu-Ray for this, is rewatch all of the episodes. Why? Because listening to Rick completely uncensored takes the dialogue for this show is a completely new experience that cranks this series into new heights.

As mentioned, special features have never been this impressive. For starters, not only are you getting episode commentary from producers Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, but you haven’t lived until you’ve heard episode commentaries from the likes of Simpsons vets Al Jean and Matt Groening or fucking Robert Kirkman. I don’t know why more TV shows do not do this…guest episode commentaries from producers that are in a like-minded industry that offer different viewpoints on TV shows that are just so startling and surreal. A lot of the animated TV industry is strong, but it’s very rare where you see examples of different TV backgrounds getting together. That’s what we get here.

Last, but not least, we get a brand-new Rick and Morty comic strip. Other than games, I gotta tell ya, I don’t think there is a medium where Rick and Morty can fail, and this comic that comes FREE with the home release is proof. The one result that I hope that comes from this, Rick and Morty comics. Yep…I said it. I want Rick and Morty comic books delivered to my local shop every month, and I want EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT IT!

Rick and Morty retails for about $22 in a bunch of places that I have looked, and it’s by far the steal of the century. Robot Chicken has a few more home releases coming later this year, but all of the sudden, the best DVD/Blu-Ray race got a LOT more interesting.

And yes, this is a prize review! But, we are going to make things a little interesting. We want to see as MANY comments as possible, then we will randomly pick a winner in one week and that winner will win Rick and Morty on Blu-Ray for FREE and with that comes a bunch of other shit that’s laying around the office that will end up in whatever package we send. GO!
