Community to Return for Sixth Season on Yahoo

Yahoo Screen Comedy, the online network that brought us gems like Losing It with John Stamos and The Fuzz, has a genuine feather to add to its cap: Season Six of Community.

After being officially canceled by NBC in May, many counted out the cult-favorite sitcom. Even Dan Harmon, the show’s creator, expressed his pessimism about its future, seemingly resigned to hang up his hat. Of course the small-but-dedicated crowd wouldn’t let their show go quietly, and as expected, they had quite the bee in their bonnet after the show was canned. (Also, despite never being a ratings hit, the show was still critically acclaimed.) But alas, everyone’s prayers were answered.

“I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo,” Harmon said in a statement yesterday.

The timing couldn’t have been better, as Sony’s hold on the Community actors’ contracts was set to expire today.

The move to the internet may also help Community reach a wider audience. “I vow to dominate our new competition,” Harmon, who will be serving as executive producer for the 13-episode season, said. “Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!”

This news will no doubt cause the die-hards to flip their lids with joy, and I can fully understand their sentiments. I too consider myself part of the Community crew, and am a firm believer in the “six seasons and a movie” philosophy. So I tip my hat to Yahoo for making this a real possibility and keeping alive one of the best shows on TV…which will now be one of the best on the internet.
