Animated Upfronts 2014 Preview: Adult Swim
Earlier today Adult Swim announced its 2014 slate which includes a bunch of awesome programming, albeit a tad lighter than last year’s slate which featured a number of pilots featuring the likes of Ubermansion, King Star King, and Mr. Pickles. Unfortunately, despite the fact that the series would win out in a popular vote on which pilot should go to series, there seems to be NO sign of Ubermansion coming anytime soon. Instead, the runners up in King Star King (June 15th) and Mr. Pickles (this fall) are getting the first crack at a series run later this year.
So what happens now? Who is the star for Adult Swim?? Last year, it was clearly Rick and Morty, but with Season two currently in production, the network looks to new shows like Mike Tyson Mysteries and Mr. Pickles to help carry the banner this fall with yet another Venture Bros. special on the way that SHOULD keep fans excited through Christmas. Is there additional irons in the fire we just don’t know about yet? Could some last minute pickups happen between today and next week at the Upfronts?
I will also be interested in seeing if Adult Swim continues its recent foray into the animated shorts game by way of Stoopid Buddy Stoodios. Will the network continue to cultivate this market or are they just doing favors for the A-talent? Carl’s Locks (Aqua Teen) usually do very well, so it will be interesting to see if the network continues to grow this or if they sort of treat it like a side project.
It will be interesting to see how Adult Swim plays out this year. They just beat FOX, FX, and others in the animated race for the last year, so you would think a hot hand keeps playing, right?
Do we know if Hulu will be the only entity to have the dub, or if it will be on other platforms, too? The show in general is definitely going to be on multiple platforms.
