Review: Breadwinners – “Thug Loaf”

Breadwinners

A quick synopsis of the premise of this show: Ducks fly around in a rocket van delivering bread to other ducks with a smattering of hip-hop/EDM related songs. Zany adventures follow. A quick synopsis of the premise of Regular Show: A blue jay and raccoon do odd jobs with a smattering of rock/synth related songs. Zany adventures follow. But that’s the groundwork for a different article. This article is a review of “Thug Loaf,” the first episode of Nickelodeon’s new series Breadwinners (Click here for release date details). The reason I brought up Regular Show in the opening is because these shows share many similarities. In this episode SwaySway and Buhdeuce deliver their remaining bread to the roughest part of town, the Lower Yeast Side. Yup, this is a pun based comedy. While down in the LYS they encounter a gang of biker ducks who begin breaking into cars. In a fairly predictable twist, the keys are locked in the van and the dangerous security system is armed. So our heroes disguise themselves as bikers to convince the mob to break into their van so the can escape. They even promise to share all the bread that’s in the van with the biker ducks. But when the ducks bust in and realize that there’s no bread to be had a street fight begins. Buhdeuce uses a pretty powerful butt slam to best the leader of the bikers and win the fight. Then Buhdeuce convinces the rest of the gang to take a group photo. With the gang at a distance, our heroes attempt to make their grand escape, only to find out that the bikers were able to stow away in the cargo hold. A hold that, with the push of a button, dispenses the gang into a lake. The animation on this show is really nice. The colors and effects are vibrant and enjoyable. Robbie Daymond and Eric Bauza do an excellent job voicing the cast in and amongst all the quacking effects. The raps are pretty lame but they fit the show enough that it’s almost passable. But something is missing and I can’t quite put my finger on it. I guess my final assessment would be “content but mildly unfulfilled.” And if that were a number, it would be a… number-solid-6-204x204
