Review: Legend of Korra “Night of a Thousand Stars”

I had a feeling that this was going to lead into an “OH MY GOD!” season finale. Find out if I was right after the jump!

Spoilers Below

So, we get the aftermath of the last episode, where Jinora got her soul stuck in the spirit world thanks to Unalaq. Pema is grief-stricken, while Tenzin tries to work on a solution to get her spirit back. Back at Republic City, Mako is visited by Bolin, who tries to lift his spirits with a signed poster and some words of encouragement. Yeah, that didn’t work so well.

Right here is where the plot thickens, with Tanroq finally waging war against his brother. The bending in this scene is a sight to behold. At the premiere, the President and his wife show up, with Varrick there to greet them. The premiere is about to start, and Varrick gives a stirring speech in front of the President, adding to his propaganda. On queue, the attackers attack the premiere.

The film continues, with Nuktuk taking on a couple of robots. Bolin goes outside, with Asami following. They talk about how Team Avatar is falling apart. Asami them goes in, with Mako staying outside. He notices the boat, so he goes in. He almost breaks himself on the doughnut dropped by one of the detectives. He lets them out, and says that the attackers are after the president.

The president is almost taken, but Bolin saves the day. He knocks them all on the pro-bending pedestal, where the best fight scene of the season takes place, and cements Bolin as the single most badass of the badasses with his one on three fight with the water benders. The last water bender gets rocked, literally, and drops that Varrick was the one who sent them. The fights, as well as the play by play by Shiro Shinobi made this scene feel amazing.

Back at Desolation Island, I mean the Southern Water Tribe, the fight rages on between the two brothers and their forces. Tanroq and his men push back Unaloq’s men, only because Unaloq and the creeper twins show up with corrupted spirits. At Republic City, Varrick got arrested, and everyone feels god damned stupid, because Mako was the only one who implicated Varrick. Just then Korra shows up, updating the President on Unaloq’s plans to destroy the world.

Raiko wins the “Most Stubborn Dumbass” award, by not helping with sending troops. Bei Fong saves face by giving Mako a detective position by firing the two idiots who got caught at the premiere. Varrick is in his custom cell, and he gives away his battleship, named Julie. He named it after his assistant.  Back at the Southern Water Tribe, the two brothers FINALLY get down to fighting. Unaloq is beating Tanroq at every turn.

So, this sure is a lot to read, right? Well, that’s how much happened in this episode. This episode was phenomenal. Not like Wan’s episode, but pretty close. The fight scene with Bolin and Varrick’s men stole the show, and the animators for the show showcased it perfectly. This episode also showed Unaloq in a more sinister style. His look changed, as well as his demeanor and tone.  This transformation is almost like he took in Vaatu. How badass would that be? Or better yet, how awesome would it be if Jinora, the grand-daughter of Aang, was? Yeah, this is all speculation and conjecture, but that’s the fun, right?

This leads to a set destination, but the way there has so many turns. Luckily, there’s a second review coming up next!
