Review: Legend of Korra A “New Spiritual Age”

Spoilers Below

Tenzin still peeved that he isn’t guiding Korra, and is kind of moping. Thank god for Bumi, because he carries this scene away from the monotony of more Tenzin moping. In spirit world, Korra is getting acclimated to the area when Jinora decides to run off after a spirit. Korra getting Spanish inquisition by a bunch of weasel looking spirits, who then use the ground as a drain to suck the two in. Korra’s inability to connect to the spirits is hurting her, and winds up turning her into a child. Jinora finds Furryfoot, and they venture to Wan Shi Tong’s spirit library. Meanwhile, Mini Korra swats at a hurting bird, and tries to care for it. As she picks up the bird, GENERAL IROH RETURNS!

With Iroh leading through spirit jungle, they get out, just in time for a tea party reception for a wedding. Elsewhere, Jinora still flying towards the library. Wan has barred every human from coming in. Jinora schools Wan in the ways of the radio. When that doesn’t work, she uses her Avatar companion card, and gets admittance. Back at the wedding reception, Iroh tells Mini Korra about how he left his body behind, and decided to live with the spirits. In a moment of infinite stupidity, Mini Korra lets out a temper tantrum that distrupts the spirits. Iroh coaches Mini-Korra into being more positive. This dude hasn’t stopped being a sage of wisdom. Back at the library, wolves make for better librarians than librarians. We come to learn that Vaatu will stay sealed in tree for as long as the portals are closed. Unalaq then shows up with Wan, and captures Jinora, corrupting Furryfoot in the process.

Iroh tells Mini-Korra that her next mission is to bring the injured bird to its nest, and that she has to do alone. She needs to undo the hate and anger that the other humans have brought. She starts, and of course, Iroh leads Korra into corrupted spirits. Mini-Korra finally shows some positive thinking and confidence, and turns the corrupted spirits back into their fo-dog glory. She gets the fo-dogs to help her and she climbs on. She ends up at the bird dragon nest, and when she places the bird in with the others, they become some sort of mega bird dragon. She returns to normal size, and gets on the bird. With the fo dogs in tow, they head to the spirit portal to shut it down. When they get there, Vaatu gets Korra hesitate long enough for Unalaq to trap her into opening the other portal by putting Jinora’s soul at risk. Like a terrible hero, she opens the portal, loses Jinora, and almost loses her soul. Luckily for her, the bird dragon saves her.

So, there really isn’t much to say about this episode. It’s a good point to start the upswing to the season finale. Tension is mounting, both portals are open, and we are going to (hopefully) get some real badass fighting between Korra and Vaatu. Jinora is missing, presumably to play a much bigger part in the next few episodes. Unfortunately, the other major plot line is thrown to the wayside. I know I said more linear storytelling, that doesn’t exactly mean screw everything else. The best shows now have a major and minor plot line.

Like I said before, this was a good lead in episode to the final episodes of the season. This has a more epic feeling to it than the rather anti-climatic ending that was season one. Check it out, and quickly, because you will be missing out when you check out the rest of the season.
