Reddit AMA Recap: Angus Oblong talks potential future of ‘The Oblongs’ on Adult Swim

 

 

Before he was an anchorman, a race car driver, a soccer player, a political candidate, or a step-brother, Will Ferrell was Bob ‘fucking’ Oblong as part of the Adult Swim animated series The Oblongs. The series last saw action almost 12 years ago and since then America has seen numerous wars and presidential changes, but no sign of a return other than scant rumors of a potential revival.

Thankfully, the creator of The Oblongs did a Reddit AMA the other day and he was able to give us his thoughts on the show’s run and when he thinks it may be back. Well, kinda…

I have nothing to officially announce yet regarding the return of The Oblongs.

That’s right. Nothing is officially announced for the return of The Oblongs although I am sure most of us would like to see the return of the series to Adult Swim sooner rather than later as it is one of the few shows besides Aqua Teen and Robot Chicken that REALLY harken back to the early days of the network when really it was just on a couple of hours a week. I think Adult Swim could use another show revolving around a family and the Oblongs are a perfect fit for where the network is now. However, could the direct-to-DVD Halloween special still be in the works?

I wrote (and still have) an Oblongs Halloween special. It never went into production, but if (if) there is another season of the show, I’ll incorporate it!

That’s one of the cool changes Adult Swim has been making as of late. Yea, they got your 12 minute shows which are awesome, but lately the network really have been looking to launch more ‘tent-pole’ franchises and have done so with China IL and will continue to do so with its upcoming Rick and Morty. However, they never forget their fans and when the Venture Bros were off for a million years they made sure to commission two specials both of which were good litmus tests for the network that now only was the brand solid but viable as well. I think this is something that could benefit The Oblongs as it would be a great series to have on board until China IL Season 3 kicks in after Season 2 wraps as both shows have that sort of different take on what is normal.  Its not like the voice talent is doing anything nowadays right? Angus even gives an update on what Will Ferrell (“Bob) and Jean Smart (“Pickles”) have been up to as of late since post the show…

Will is curled up in my pet pig’s doggy bed now napping. After Jean Smart & I got divorced, she hasn’t spoken to me except for the occasional drive-by bullhorn scolding. But hey, I got half of her stuff!

For those that don’t know, The Oblongs was an animated series inspired by Angus Oblong’s picture book Creepy Susie and 13 Other Tragic Tales for Troubled Children as it followed the family as they live in poor and run down community filled with pollution so as a result they had all sorts of disabilities and deformities. The people causing the pollution lived in ‘The Hills’ and they were the rich and cunty variety that you would eventually see on the MTV reality series of the same name. However, to wrap up the AMA chat, Angus had this to say about the whole ‘point’ of the series…

Must there be one for a show to exist?? Well then, I suppose it would be “Man’s inhumanity to fellow mankind with the hope of a shiny, new brotherhood on the horizon, free from cilantro and watermelon. A place where ponies have wings and hamsters and bears are the same size.”

Rumor has it that Adult Swim had asked a couple of studios to help produce the series and I guess the response was 50/50. That said, there is hope that The Oblongs will return because no one likes to see a frown on a clown.
