Season Two Review: Fish Hooks

Disney Channel is supposed to be for kids and families right?? Shows like Phineas and Ferb and Gravity Falls certainly pull on the heartstrings of yesteryear for Disney as they provide the mystical, enchanted, but goofy comedy that Disney built a multi-billion dollar industry on. But, of all the shows that air Friday Nights on Disney, I think there is one that kind of distances itself from the pack and maybe relates more so to people. Ironically enough, the show stars a school of fish, slugs, hamsters, and snakes all holed up in an aquarium with no one but a bungling manager to watch them. This show is Fish Hooks.

In only its second season, Fish Hooks has become one of better animated shows on television in terms of writing, acting, and of course the jokes. For those that don’t know the premise or if this is your first time hearing about the show, Fish Hooks follows brothers Milo and Oscar as they traverse through the treacherous waters of high school. Their friend Bea is your pretty typical teenage girl that usually freaks out when popular boys are around. She of course is joined by a littany of friends all of whom can be easily pointed out and compared to people they went to school with. Of course you get the shy, the nerdy, the show off, the diva, and well a slug (seriously, they are out there) which is great because it allows the writers to take advantage of certain personality traits and just go nuts. Oscar has a habit of being shy as hell, so seeing him in situations like trying to pick out a tie, going to the prom with his girlfriend,  and displaying super-cool science projects. Milo is usually the one that causes SOME sort of trouble for his brother because when something goes on with him he makes sure EVERYONE knows about it. From bad skin and sleep overs, to getting a job and going to the diner, you know Milo is around, but at any point he could just GO!

For the most part this has been on point and as a result save for the occasional guest star appearance from Felicia Day or Wallace Shawn, the brunt of the heavy lifting has been done by the show’s already stellar staff. Great voices like Atticus Shaffer(“Albert Glass, The Middle) , John DiMaggio (Jocktopus, Futurama/Adventure Time) , and Dana Snyder (Mr. Baldwin, Aqua/Squidbillies) help surround the characters with a veteran presence that adds a certain legitimacy to the show that maybe most shows on Disney (animated or otherwise) might not have.

The one downfall we might have seen from the season is the somewhat repetitive story lines featuring contest after competition after crush formula that other programs have done. That said, the vices are few, as this show is as good as it gets on TV and one that should be programmed in your DVR.

Season 3 of Fish Hooks starts June 7th!
