Review: The Looney Tunes Show ‘The Black Widow’

The Looney Tunes return to primetime, but does it work??

Spoilers Below

The kids are on spring break from school so naturally Daffy thinks he needs the time off too despite the fact that he isn’t in school.  As a result, Daffy is trying to plan an exotic vacation, but know one wants to go with him. Thankfully, Porky agrees to go with him and off they go! Once there, the duo take a nine hour bus ride to some random Mexican town that is nowhere near a beach. It probably wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world because the bus comes back next week, but Porky keeps worrying that he forgot something back at the house. To help pass the time, the boys decide to have some fun by streaking downtown, but the townspeople just throw them in the slammer.  Daffy gets his one phone call and he uses it to call Speedy of whom shows up, throws a party,  Daffy and Porky go home to find Porky’s house up in flames.

Its movie night with Bugs and Lola and they are watching the Black Widow, but she can’t seem to shut the hell up throughout the movie as she’s always asking questions. The next morning, Bugs is thrilled because Daffy is out of town so obviously he thinks he is going to have a quiet week, that is until Lola shows up complaining that she lost her mother’s bracelet. That gets settled, then next day BOOM! Lola’s dad Walter is over. Turns out no matter what, Bugs can’t seem to take advantage of the fact that Daffy is away and relax. Walter is looking for his wife’s bracelet as is Lola, but to thwart his scent Lola places a black widow business card so that she can buy some time until she can find the bracelet. Problem is, Lola has NO clue where this bracelet is so Bugs tries to help her retrace her steps in an attempt to get some sort of clue as to where to find it.

A lost bracelet is the least of the bunnies’ worries as Lola begins stealing to bulk up the street cred of the black widow, hence giving her more time to look for the bracelet. Bugs convinces Lola to put the bracelet back but not before Lola puts together her Ocean 11 style caper to get the bracelet back in there. Unfortunately, none of it works and Bugs gets thrown in jail, but Lola confesses, but isn’t exactly truthful.

It feels great to have The Looney Tunes Show in prime time, but this week’s episode wasn’t exactly blowing me away in the laughs department. It seems as though the funny stuff took a back seat to pretty well thought out story telling as both plots offered up pretty entertaining twists near the end. Kristen Wiig as Lola was as strong as always, and of course Jeff Bergman lays down the law as Bugs and Daffy, but as mentioned no one had any particularly thrilling dialogue to help make it a welcome return. In any case, its good to see these guys back.
