“Bee Day”

Spoilers Below

Its Bee Day in Danville and Phineas and Ferb decide to put together a wading pool for their parents akin to the one they used to have when Candace was little and not emo (of which she is now). Isabella shoots by, but instead of helping she needs to borrow something that can turn people into bees.  With Candace now an emo, she certainly isn’t acting like regular Candace anymore as she acts all mopey around the house, doesn’t care about her brothers’ latest inventions, and is just worried about her hair. Thankfully, Lynn doesn’t seem to be too worried as she went through a similar phase when she was younger.  To help deal with her new found depression, Lynn tells Candace to try poetry all the while her brothers try out their newest water attraction that looks all sorts of bad ass, but it certainly needed proper testing before Isabella and the girls can test it out.

Meanwhile,  Perry is told to stop Doof on another harrowing scheme, but of course as soon as he gets there he is swatted and captured…like a bee. Turns out Doof has created a new -inator where the queen bees will be convinced that he is a king bee and alas he will be able to take over Danville with an army of bees.  That said the pheromone seems to work just fine, especially on people.  To prove it a bunch of bees swarm to the HQ, but Doof sucks them up in a vacuum. Thankfully, Perry is able to his the reverse button and let the bees loose leading  Doof to get stung on his tongue. The explosion causes the pheromone to splatter all over Phineas and Ferb’s slide causing the bees to come by and pick it up out of the yard before Lynn comes by. Fortunately, the pool stays behind, but despite all this Candace still stays emo.

Just like every cassette that came out in the 80s, this week’s Phineas and Ferb had a definite A-side and in this case it was ‘Bee Day’. One of the things I am starting to like in these latter episodes of the long running series is the emergence of Candace to do small story lines that might not be all about her trying to capture her brothers. From finding love, to turning into flies, and with tonight’s episode of her being an emo kid, Candace has really been bringing the gravy by herself. That said, her plot was a bit dated when you consider that emo music’s popularity died some time ago despite some writers’ attempts to keep it around. In any case, the other two plots were funny, but nothing really popped out at me as being out of the ordinary aside from the Candace plot, although it was kind of fun to see Doof’s ex-wife.  Oh yea, and the Animal House reference had me falling out of my chair.

“Bee Story”

Isabella and the fireside girls are getting ready for Bee Appreciation Day and they want to get their Bee patch. To do so, the girls decide to turn themselves into bees. They decide to get the machine that turned Candace into a fly a while ago from Phineas and ZAP! Isabella is a bee!! And then zap again, the rest of the Fireside girls are now bees. It isn’t long before the girls buzz next to Doof Inc and get sucked into a vacuum of which Perry hits the reverse button which causes the bees to escape and return home to the Fireside lodge with a Bee Queen in tact. The girls turn back into human and then dance to cause the bees to return to their resting spots. Because of this, the girls get their badges, and head on over to Phineas and Ferb’s for a pool party.

Wanda tells Agent P.  that Poofenplotz is up to no good with jelly and she’s gotta stop her! Unfortunately, P gets packages in a big bag, so what’s a dog to do?? Well listen to an evil plot of course!! Turns out Poof wants to consume a bunch of bee jelly to turn her into a bee and make her Queen of the World!  Unfortunately, when Agent P tries to stop Poof on the chopper flight over, the vehicle crashes into a jelly factory causing it to spill all over it. But, thanks to the magical powers of karate, P is able to apprehend Poof and bring her to justice!

And now for the B-side, and to be honest I don’t think the second part drops off THAT much. The fireside girls basically borrow a story line that Candace did a while ago, but I liked Candace’s better by quite a bit. I also don’t think the Agent P/Poof plots are as funny as the Perry/Doof plots mainly because I think Povenmire writes Doof’s dialogue which a lot more care and conviction than he does for Poof. That said, it was quite a lot of fun to see the two stories interwoven together, and I do think the Fireside girls have the means to do a spin-off.
