Review: Gravity Falls ”Boyz Crazy”

GravityFalls1

Spoilers Below

Mabel’s fav boy band Sev’ral Timez is in town and she is AMPED to see them perform live. Despite Dipper and Wendy not giving a shit about the band, Mabel,  Candy, and Grenda are geared up and ready to go.  Unfortunately, once they get their the girls find out the show is sold out which means their plans are screwed for the evening. As a result, the girls break in and find out that the band members of the band are actually grown akin to the raptors in Jurassic Park only these guys are more like rats in a cage. Its here that these band mates are genetically engineered by their producer Mr. Brassman and that the band wants out of their confinements. Thankfully, Mabel and the girls set them free in an effort to break them out and eventually bring them back to the Mystery Shack.

Mabel really wants to keep the band in her room and it gets even worse when she kind of bonds with them after teaching the guys how to properly act as human beings.  As a result Mabel flips out on her friends whey they decide its time to let the boys go after Brassman gets arrested. Weirdly enough, the band is just fine with staying with Mabel and she now has the power to order them around to do things for her like throwing her friends out of her room. Eventually, the boys write a song convincing Mabel to let them free and become friends with Candy and Grenda.

Meanwhile, Wendy breaks up with Robbie, but the douche bag pretty much hypnotizes Wendy into taking him back with some weird CD.  Turns out, Grunkle Stan has heard of something like this going down before so he opts to help out his nephew. Stan shows that just about all music has some sort of message in them, but you’ve got to play them real slow to hear them. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work too well and instead Dipper decides to play the record BACKWARDS and guess what? A secret message to Wendy is laden in the song.  When Dipper catches up with the young couple, Dipper plays the song and Wendy splits with Robbie again, but the young stud isn’t able to capitalize because he moves in for the kill way too fast.

This week’s episode shows one of the major downfalls of the music industries…boy bands. But, is it really a contemporary issue nowadays? Seriously, I very seldom hear about boy bands winning over girls’ hearts anymore, well at least not as bad as it was in the late 90s. Also, I think TJ Miller is a more notable name nowadays than Lance Bass, but I felt the latter was a good sport about more or less mocking the reason anyone knows his name. Dipper’s plots seem to be going to the well way too often when it comes to trying to win over Wendy. I get it, he has a crush on her, but he’s got a HUGE book with mysteries about Gravity Falls, a plot utilizing that every now and again wouldn’t kill anyone would it? I do like the fact that Grenda and Candy are becoming more valued members of the cast and I wouldn’t be surprised if they were used more next season. Unfortunately, this episode is crazy for all the wrong reasons.
