DVD REVIEW: AMERICAN DAD VOLUME 7

Of all of Seth MacFarlane’s shows on FOX, American Dad might have the most hardcore audience of the bunch. Obviously Family Guy gets the ratings but if you were to poll a lot of the early fans of that show they would probably tell you American Dad hearkens more back to the early 2000’s era of FG and as such is seen as the superior show. Today, we review  the recently released Volume 7 out now on DVD!

For those who do not know, American Dad follows Langley Fall, Virginia’s Smith family. We have Stan Smith, a husband and father of two of whom works at the CIA. He is a stout Repubican/Christian and like most he opposes gay rights and is often naive to issues dealing with race, creed, or sexual orientation. His wife Francine, is the one who is constantly arguing with her husband and usually from episode to episode she puts up with it in any way she can which can include drugs, alcohol, and the more than occasional flirtation with other dudes.  Their daughter Hayley still lives with them despite now being in her second marriage to one Jeff Fischer in season 6. She’s a bit more liberal than her right-winged father, as Hayley regularly smokes pot with her hippie husband and on more than a few occasions have made her opinions quite evident in the face of her father. Her brother Steve, is a geek who would rather talk about Star Wars and sing in boy bands then deal with his father’s constant berating due to Steve’s lack of interest in things like sports and his social ineptitude with women. Also, similar to Brian in Family Guy, The Smiths house a pet fish named Klaus of whom has an Eastern German accent and is typically good for throwing in his two cents whenever the family is dealing with its typical squabbles. Lastly, we have who may be the star of the show…Roger!  An alien from outer space and Steve’s best friend, Roger is usually up to no good in just about every episode typically donning disguises while doing his dirty deeds and enjoys cocaine, banging everything that moves, and isn’t afraid to stab either Stan or Steve in the back should they get in his way.

Overall, the DVD has a pretty decent selection of episodes like “School Lies”, “Home Wrecker”, “Stan’s Food Restaurant” and more. Also included is the Christmas episode “For Whom the Sleigh Bell Tolls”, as well as ‘Flirting with Disaster” which had the opening setup similar to “The Office” and American Dad’s take on The Fugitive in “The People vs. Martin Sugar”. However, the special features leave a lot to be desired as not all of the episodes had any commentaries and the inclusion of the 2010 Comic Con although was funny, felt dated and out of place which has me recommending this DVD to the hardcore fans only. If your a fan of American Dad and really want to just check out the episodes, maybe Hulu or Amazon could be the better fit for you.
