Trailer Breakdown “Archer: Dreamland”

What the hell is going on?

The eighth season of Archer is set to kick off with eight episodes on April 5th only on FXX, and when we first posted about the trailer we started to pick at it in terms of what to expect in what is essentially the beginning of the end of the Emmy-winning franchise as we know it. As a result, we decided to do a full on break down so we can go even FURTHER into the first trailer entitled “Rough Night” and see what kind of information we can uncover.

As noted, the eighth season of Archer is codenamed “Dreamland”. At first, the title seemed rather trivial, but given where we left off in the show’s seventh season, “Dreamland” could very well be a glimpse of what’s to expect this season in terms of finale.

Presumably, Sterling Archer was shot dead at the season seven finale, but with the aforementioned “Dreamland” title, I think we can better assume that Sterling is dreaming in some sort of comatose state. For those thinking, “who the hell can survive gunshots like that?” I give you Kill Bill. Whether or not Sterling is gearing up for a murderous rampage remains to be seen.

The eighth season sees Archer’s principle characters take on new roles, all of whom are actually not familiar with each other, and more specifically, Sterling. Set in 1947, I’ll be interested to see if post-WW2 plot lines arise. Malory is the biggest mob boss in LA, Lana works at a nightclub, Woodhouse is Sterling’s former partner in crime, and Cheryl is just Cheryl I suppose?

Fans of Noir-type series appear to be taken care of this season, but the saddest part of Archer’s eighth season is that this really is the beginning of the end. Adam Reed has noted that after these final 24 episodes, set to air over the next three seasons, that will be it for FX Networks’ longest running animated franchise. What happens to Floyd County Productions post-Archer? Have the producers considered alternate means in which to continue the franchise like video games or comic books? FXX wants another animated series to premiere after Archer before the latter finishes up, but it’s gonna be a weird adjustment not having our Spring-animated darling to not look forward to.
