Shorts Review: Red vs. Blue Season 12 Episode 10
Rebel Team, meet the Feds. Feds, meet the Rebels. Glad we finally were able to have you two meet up.
I’m curious to see how this plays out. Last week, we got to see how Sarge and his group got picked out by Locus and the Federal Army. What’s funny is that they gave Sarge the same story that the Republic gave Tucker and company.
Spoilers!
The two teams finally start to figure out what’s going on. The only person who has any sense is Wash, because he is seeing it as a neutral party. Everyone else is seeing it as their side isn’t terrible. Wash thinks that the best course of action is to get both sides to sit down and talk out a truce. Simmons thinks something’s not right, but Wash thinks its because of his idea.
Simmons realizes that the alarms are off. They go to check the base, and everyone deserted the base. The base is under attack, and a grunt tries to tell Sarge that it wasn’t the Rebels attacking. Before he can say who it is, he disintegrates. A sticky grenade hits the Warthog, causing a huge explosion. Locus walks down after the explosion with his troops from the refueling station. Locus says that he is a professional, and always finishes his mission.
There’s a great transitional piece of CG, where Tucker readies a grenade behind his back, and it fit seamlessly into the rest of the shot. Wash has no idea what’s going on, because Locus killed the men he worked for. Just as a sniper takes a shot at Wash, Felix jumps in front of Wash with his shield out, deflecting the shot.
And in the “CM fucking called this moment!” of the show, Felix asks for the grenade Tucker was about to throw. Felix then makes some really snide comments to Wash about saving Wash’s ass, and throws the grenade up to Locus. Yes, Felix flipped on the group, and I fucking called it!
Felix goes on to say how the shot to the shin was to buy trust and information, and this was a rouse from the get go. Locus wants Felix to wrap it up so they can kill them, but Felix just wants to rub it in. Locus and Felix are working for a higher up so they can acquire the planet. Tucker thought back to what Kimball said, and realized that Locus and Felix started this war. Of course, Locus gives the crew a run down of how they will die, no one will know the truth, and everyone else will die. Then one of his officers drops the grenade, and hops off.
This officer takes her shots at Felix, who’s shield just knocks the gun out of the officer’s hands. This starts total anarchy, where the female officer foes for some hand to hand combat on Felix. When he loses the upper hand, Felix stabs the girl in the leg. She crawls over to the group just as Dr. Grey runs to the group, and the female officer hits a teleporter as Locus tries to shoot the team with a Spartan Laser.
They make it back to the Republic’s base, and the female officer takes her cloaking device off to reveal that she was Carolina! She brings another surprise back, and it’s Church! He’s an A.I.! Tucker is so overwhelmed with joy, he drops his gun and goes to hug the artificial fucker. That moment of joy made Tucker not realize that Church is a hologram.
All I can say is wow. From episode one, I knew there was something not quite right about Felix. However, I feel so vindicated when I saw it happen in this episode, because I fucking called it! He’s more of a scumbag character than I originally thought.
The CG in this episode was a huge step up from the rest of the episodes this season. The best scene was with Tucker and the grenade. The fight scene with Felix and the blacked out Carolina looked fantastic as well. The choreography was fantastic to see, and it left me wanting more.
This episode seemed to be a “second half” premiere, because things escalated. The story and CG got better, and Church coming back made the ending infinitely better. I am going to go ahead now and say this is a benchmark episode for the series. Hopefully, the season going forward will keep the bar up.
