Review: World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman “We Are the Summer”
Well, “We Are the Summer” may be the single reason why World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman has a TV-MA rating. Let’s go through a checklist here:
- Women in barely there bikinis.
- Tig ole Bitties.
- The Beach bringing all of this together.
- Satsuki bringing the past, borderline incestuous feelings she has for Moroha and his past self.
- Oh, and Tokiko being the Human Resources worst nightmare.
Normally, I would be a bit weirded out by the walking sexual harassment lawsuit. But Tokiko had me rolling throughout the episode, especially when she tried shoving a corn cob up people’s asses. I don’t know why I am laughing my ass off here, but something about a girl being the brash pervert just slays me.
It was the brash, proper introduction to Tokiko that really saved this episode. Otherwise, it would have been more of the same teenage, over-sexed hormone drama. There wasn’t much fighting, outside of a race between Satsuki and Momo, but no powers were used otherwise. I’m glad that the writers saw to actually use Tokiko here and give “We Are the Summer” something to go over the top with. Otherwise, it would have faltered, much like Naruto Shippuden, The Rolling Girls, and Maria the Virgin Witch had done. This saved my weekend, because it was a bust otherwise.
“We Are the Summer” was the weekend saver. I know I’ve said it before, but a lot of Funimation’s acquired shows run in a pattern. If one show is going tits up, the rest will follow, with this week being no exception. I was genuinely entertained by “We Are the Summer,” and it brought a perverted comedy that I haven’t seen in a while. It rode that line between straight up porn, and just perverted comedy. World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman didn’t fall prey to taking itself seriously like a lot of shows tend to do, and it’s a great antithesis to what’s on now.
