Review: Wander Over Yonder “The Picnic”
Spoilers Below
Here we are introduced to Lord Hater whom is shooting a promo on Emperor Awesome, but none of the Emperor’s crew can take Hater seriously because Wander is acting like an annoying little brother to the dude who is supposed to be the most evil in the universe. Awesome and Hater’s armies decide to stop the talk and go to war, so they both send their armies after one another, but when Wander gets in the way to setup for a picnic it distracts Hater and he gets wrecked. Thankfully, Hater is able to put on some gloves and control a big robot ala Real Steel and it does big battle witj Awesome’s dinosaur. Wander comes over and starts offering sandwiches to the big brute monsters, and again this causes Hater to be distracted and again defeated. With the robot out of the way, the Emperor turns his sites on Hater who puts up a force field, but again Wander’s around and it starts to really annoy Hater. This causes Hater’s force field to dissipate and for a big chase to ensue between Hater and Wander. Hater runs back to take out Awesome once and for all and he is able to gain the Ultimate power… to get his wish granted! Wander again shows u and as such Hater ends up wasting his wish due to more distractions. Oh yea, and meet Sylvia.
If you know anything Craig McCracken, this show has his paint brush all over the place. Fans of Dexter’s Lab and PowderPuff girls, especially of the art direction for those programs, will pick up on this series no problem. However, there’s more than what meets the eye. For starters, the voice cast is STELLAR…yep STELLAR. Wander is Jack McBrayer’s best voice role by a mile whence compared to his previous work on Phineas and Archer, and its even zanier than those two so maybe that had something to do with it. Sam Riegel and Keith Ferguson were wonderful in their depictions as Awesome and Hater respectively as Awesome had me laughing lots and lots and Hater is just as good. The whole thing feels like a 12 minute long Looney Tunes episode with everything that’s going on so those looking for the in depth and emotional plots from say a Gravity Falls, this show may not be for you. But, what Wander lacks in storytelling, it makes more than up for in high-octane fun that gives something a little different, but maybe familiar for Disney audiences.
