Review: Uncle Grandpa ‘Aunt Grandma’; ‘Grounded’

Spoilers Below

Uncle Grandma

Zach’s BLASTING on guitar, so Uncle G. wants to turn him into a rock star. But, Uncle Grandpa has some competition in the ‘helping kids out’ category and that comes in the way of Aunt Grandma. Really her selling point is just simplifying things to the nth degree. Instead of going on grand adventures, Aunt Grandma just gives people shit. Soon, Uncle Grandpa comes to the conclusion that he can’t compete with Aunt Grandma’s hot car, hot ass, and most importantly helping people. To help, Uncle Grandpa decides to update his ways of helping kids by LOOKING for kids that want adventures. One opportunity comes up and to prove that he knows how to go on an adventure better than anyone, and Uncle Grandpa even invites Aunt Grandma to see exactly how good he is at helping people. We find out that Aunt Grandma is actually ‘Little Priscilla Jones’ who at one time was a girl looking for help, but he totally screwed it up. While recounting her story, Priscilla FLIPS out and beats the shit out of Uncle Grandpa, steals his mustache, and flies away like Mrs. Poppins.

This episode of Uncle Grandpa was possibly my favorite of the season. Lena Headey was absolutely bonkers as Aunt Grandma and she seemed like she fit RIGHT in with the crazy cast of characters. She screams, she yells, she does everything that Uncle Grandpa expects of you. On top of that, BOTH episodes that aired this week for Uncle Grandpa, featured Uncle G. helping out kids which was a trope that was rather underutilized this season as compared to last season. With Aunt Grandma leaving the scene the way she did, I couldn’t help but wish for her back. Like does she have her OWN Pizza Steve? This and more is what I’d like to know.

Grounded

Riley keeps getting bad grades at school and his dad grounds him instead of letting him go to a party. Uncle Grandpa shows up and offers to help Riley, He does that by freeing Riley from his punishment on a lie, so Uncle Grandpa decides to trick him RIGHT back. Uncle G. and his gang head to a party which is total Pizza Steve territory. Steve obviously betrays Uncle Grandpa and Gus, so the duo decide to get HIM back too by scaring the shit out of the party with Gus’ scariest monster face. Problem is, the kids think Gus is just part of the celebration and the monster is rendered useless. Uncle Grandpa jumps into action and pretends to be part of the party, only to lead the kids through a pink door and not invite Riley. As a result, Riley apologizes and Uncle Grandpa lets him into a new party that is really just party monsters threatening to party with him forever! This causes Riley to apologize again

Uncle Grandpa Babies

Imagine an Uncle Grandpa where all of the characters are babies. However, their small size certainly doesn’t prevent anyone from doing their jobs.

This episode featured yet another trope that seemed to be lost from this season especially when compared to season one…alternate realities. While we’ve had spots of the brilliant character designs that come from this production house, ‘Grounded’ was maybe the best one of the season in exhibiting the natural creative talents of Peter Browngardt’s and his incredible affinity for monsters. That added to watching monster versions of Pizza Steve is about as rewarding of an experience as you can expect. However, while I loved the ‘Uncle Grandpa Babies’, I felt it was almost too short of a short, as I wanted it to be twice as long.
