Review: The Simpsons ‘Whisky Business’
Spoilers Below
Moe has had it! And after watching several hours of FOX’s NASCAR coverage I can’t blame him…Moe wants to kill himself! Thankfully the beam in which he tries to hang himself from gives way and Moe lives after Homer and gang bring him back. Not wanting to waste this opportunity at a second life, Moe decides to go to Capitol City with Marge, Lenny, Homer, and Carl. Right away the tourist group has a great time on the town and it commences with everyone buying Moe a suit in an effort to make him feel better. The suit does JUST that as as soon as he gets back, he goes to the bar and spiffs it up a bit which of course garners the attention of new customers. Those new customers include two new venture capitalists whom take a like to Moe’ home made whiskey and offer to invest. Eventually, the whisky does so well, the investors decide to offer up the whisky brand as an IPO on the stock exchange, but Moe ruins his suit! And yea, despite the fact that Marge tries to cheer up the entrepreneur, Moe’s IPO tumbles and he’s back to square one…but he’s good.
Meanwhile, Bart and Lisa are with Grampa by themselves and neither are really on their best behavior. Lisa heads to a jazz club where she checks out a Bleeding Gum Murphy hologram (much to her dismay) and Bart constructs a water slide of which Grampa ends up crashing out. Thankfully, Bart kisses the old man which wakes him up feeling pretty positive about the day. That said he’s still and old guy and Bart has to take care of him now from his sustained injuries which starts to eat up a lot of Bart’s free time. We soon find out that Grampa faked the injuries because he liked spending time with Bart. Later, Lisa decides to write a letter to Murphy’s label in an attempt to make them stop using his image for profit. The label answers by bringing by a whole bunch of holograms for Lisa to whet her whistle with.
I love Moe, I love Moe episodes, and I loved this episode with Moe. He is one of my favorite characters and I like the fact that we are seeing him as a focal point for more and more plots because the son of a bitch deserves it. This one seems somewhat inspired from elsewhere however, as it reminds me of Peter Griffin’s mustache, or Daffy Duck’s water in Space Jam. That said, whenever Moe tries to off himself it usually makes for a pretty entertaining evening. On the other side, I wasn’t too crazy about either Bart or Lisa’s plots as Lisa’s looked like it could’ve been an episode all her own, but instead it got trimmed down until it was nothing whereas Bart’s plot waded into cliche’d-island. Whisky is this episode’s business, but it ain’t making that business any good.
