Review: Steven Universe “Together Breakfast”
Spoilers!
What is a kid to do when he is the only person in the house? Turn the house into a trailer home in a tornado and make some breakfast! That’s what Steven did, and he did it well. He makes a stack of instant waffles with syrup and popcorn for everyone, but no one comes home. Everyone comes home, and ignores the breakfast Steven made. Steven takes it upon himself to go inside the temple and follow Pearl. He jumps in the water, which just pulls him over the edge, and into a weird river.
He manages to keep the breakfast in tact. He manages to make it to Amethyst’s area, which is a mess due to Pearl’s stuff washing up there. She goes nuts, and forces Steven past the Crystal Heart, into Garnet’s room. Everyone gets serious, because Garnet seems to be doing work. Steven, however, is overjoyed that everyone is together, and causes Garnet to get distracted long enough for her whatever that mass was to escape. The together breakfast gets taken over by this entity, and attacks the Gems. Steven forces the breakfast into Garnet’s fire pit, and saves the day. They close the episode out by making a new together breakfast so awesome, they can’t eat it.
This episode shows 2 sides of the same coin. Where the last episode was Steven’s drive to be helpful in any way possible, this was just Steven wanting to not be alone, and just have a “family breakfast.” It showed to what lengths he would go to make it happen.
This didn’t have as much going on, though, and felt like a filler episode. For this to come so fast, that’s kind of a bummer. Don’t get me wrong, it was still a good episode, but it didn’t have much substance to go on, hence why it felt like a filler episode. Hopefully next week we can get something even more substantial, and drive the story back on track.
