Review: Steven Universe “Lars and the Cool Kids”
So, what happens when the cool kid is intimidated by other cool kids? After the jump, find out what Lars does!
Spoilers!
The Gems are looking over Steven trying to touch what ends up to be moss grown by Rose Quartz, Steven’s mother. Pearl thinks she knows what to do, and goes into some sort of interpretive dance, just to summon police tape to rope off the moss. Steven thinks with his stomach, and goes off to get pizza. He sees Lars, who looks more embarassed to see Steven than normal. Turns out that Lars is trying to get the cool kids (Jenny, Sour Cream, and Bucky) to notice him by trying to not notice them. Steven gets a case of smart, and goes right to them. Steven gets them to hang, and he gets Lars to come along as well. The cool kids drift to Steven, and kind of reject whatever Lars is saying. They just drive around, finding Bucky’s political father, and end up going to Dead Man’s Mouth. I smell a trip to the moss farm…
Oh look, they end up at the moss farm, and rip the tape down. They end up going into the water, where the moss eats the kids. Lars loses it, because he thinks he won’t be able to hang with the cool kids. Steven goes off, because Lars didn’t know him, let alone Steven. They get the kids in the car, but the moss starts to grow on the car. They get to the tops of the mountain, and the moss bloomed, setting the flowers across Beach City. Steven covers for Lars, saying Lars drove everyone there. It seems like Jenny, Sour Cream, and Bucky all accept the two of them.
I love it when the kids who are trying to be badass get so intimidated by their badasses. You see it often when the higher heirarchy of cool kids show up. You see that the cooler kids are just people, who want to chill. And as long as you’re chill, they’re gonna be chill. Lars was a prick to Steven, and he felt embarassed by him. Steven’s naive, not a care in the world attitude with Jenny, Sour Cream, and Bucky finally was able to break down Lars, and he may actually warm up to him. There was a lot of moving forward, but part of me hopes that Lars doesn’t completely ditch being a prick to Steven, because there’s one less jerk for Steven to interact with. Having only people who are cool with Steven will get the show running in a rut.
The episode almost completely lacked the Gems, but that’s not a totally bad thing. It gives the supporting characters (in this case, Lars) to shine where normally, they would get a minute tops. I liked Lars, but the fact that he got broken down is making me like him even more. I also hope to see more of Jenny, Sour Cream, and Bucky, because they were just chill characters. It’s a teenage element for the child on the show. It’s the in-between for the Gems and characters like Onion and Connie. It’s official, ladies and gentlemen. I believe in Steven.
