Review: Steven Universe “Cheeseburger Backpack”
Spoilers!
Steven is sitting outside, waiting for the mail delivery. Steven still can’t use his powers, but he gets his bag that he thinks will let him help more on the Gems’s missions. He wants to help by carrying the statue on the next mission. Packs half of his room into the bag, and goes to the Seaside Spire. They get to the spire, and it is literally falling apart. The group needs to cross vortex, but can’t jump it, so Steven ties his sweaters together and swings across.
Pearl is going mother hen, because the spire is in worse condition inside than outside. There was an infestation of crystal shrimp at the base of the stairs going to the top floor, and as Pearl was trying to explain this elaborate plan, Steven just throws sandwiches out to get the shrimp to move. They get to the pedestal, just to find out Steven forgot the statue at home, but he has his stuffed animal. The spire then falls apart, seemingly from not having the statue. The raft from earlier shows up.
Ok, Steven is so cute in this episode! He tries so damn hard to be useful, that even if you hate him, you can’t help but root for him by the end of the episode. I find the youthful disposition in Steven so charming, especially in how he tries so hard to make things work.
The other Gems show their personalities more in this episode. Garnet is all business, just get there, get it done, and leave. Amethyst is the cool, somewhat tomboyish girl who isn’t afraid of fun or danger. And poor Pearl is the “mother” of the group. I was worried about the pacing of this show, thinking it was going to take a while for the characters to gain traction and get going.
I can guarantee this now. All bias aside, I think that this show will be better than Adventure Time, or any other show on Cartoon Network. That is something major, because I never thought I would say that.
