Review: Rick and Morty ‘”Meeseeks and Destroy”
Spoilers Below
Rick and Morty are running for their lives again from demonic alien spirits which gets the best of Morty causing him to quit the team. Thankfully, Rick convinces Morty to take over the team as his way of bargaining to stay on to which the little guy obliges. Rick bets Morty that his adventure is going to suck and to make sure that he sees through on the bet Rick hands off a box to the rest of the Smith family this way they can stay preoccupied and not interrupt Rick and Morty’s adventure.
The Smith family use Rick’s box to summon Meeseeks that act as sort of genies to make their wishes come true. Summer wants to be famous, Beth needs a friend, and Jerry wants to shave off points from his golf score. Once the Meeseeks fulfill their purposes, then they get to disappear. Problem is, Jerry seems to be the only one who has a problem that no ordinary Meeseeks can fix.
Soon, the Meeseeks grow weary of sticking around and helping Jerry which also keeps Mr. Smith from attending to his wife and daughter. Jerry decides to take Beth to dinner with all of the Meeseeks getting ready to have a fucking nervous breakdown over this golf swing and end up in a big scuffle. Eventually, the Meeseeks decide to kill Jerry so Beth helps him take off before they get hurt. The husband and wife duo end up in a freezer where Jerry tries two more golf swings that causes all of the Meeseeks to disappear one and for all.
Rick and Morty end up in some village for a new adventure this one ending up a Jack and the Beanstalk deal. Only, this time around, Rick and Morty get arrested after killing ‘Dale’ the Giant which of course is NOTHING like the fairy tale. Thankfully, Rick and Morty are able to avoid prison and end up at some tavern whilst getting down the stairs. Unfortunately, when Morty tries to go to the bathroom, this Jellybean tries to rape him while Rick is singing karaoke. Thankfully, Morty is able to escape unscathed and convinces Rick to head back to the village they came from to give them a bunch of money that Rick won by gambling. Rick kills the Jellybean and escapes with Morty back home which is a fucking mess.
Rick and Morty is one of those shows that you really can’t blink while watching because it just seems that every second there is something going on that you aren’t going to want to miss. For starters, no matter where Rick and Morty go, the backgrounds and character models are some of THE best in the business.Honestly, aside from Uncle Grandpa, this show has the best looking creatures/monsters and what not. Also, nobody has more entertaining trash-talk banter than Rick whom seems to always be running on a fast motor because he hits, hits, hits with one-liners and you can’t help but pause the show, run to the freezer and grab a frozen bag of peas for your face afterwards because EVERY line kills. Some of the dialogue is old-fashioned, but given Rick’s age it fits him perfect. Unfortunately, I think Morty was a BIT too much like Justin Roiland’s other character that he is known for ‘Oscar’ from Fish Hooks in that he was just a tad too whiny. Not saying that’s a terrible thing, but I honestly was looking for Oscar to swim on screen in some scenes. Jerry kind of takes a back-seat with the girls in his plot in favor or the Meeseeks and I’m Ok with that because those guys were HYSTERICAL. The fact that everyone kept arguing over different golf strokes just had me in stitches and was so wildly original. I also love the idea of seeing a bit of stress in Jerry and Beth’s marriage, and I’m wondering if these marital problems persist or if everything is more or less patched up. Another slight thing that is starting to hedge in on me is the intro of the series. EVERY great animated show has awesome intros and for this series I just thing the score is a bit TOO cliche and am hoping we can get one that is a bit more creative for the Season 2 drop.
