Review: Mickey Mouse “Space Walkies”

Spoilers Below

It’s been awhile since we’ve had a new Mickey Mouse episode. Since the quality has been all over the map, I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one. Let’s see where this space-themed episode takes us.

Mickey and Pluto are gliding around space in their rocket. Just as they begin their re-entry sequence, Pluto insists on going out for a walk. With only three minutes until their rocket shoots back into Earth’s atmosphere, Mickey grabs the leash and takes his beloved pet out for a quick tinkle. Thankfully, a hydrant-shaped satellite isn’t far away. Once Pluto has done the deed, Mickey gets ready to head back to his ship. But now Pluto has disappeared.

The mouse finds his dog digging in a pile of space trash. He grabs a frisbee and tosses it in order to get Pluto’s attention. However, it isn’t really a frisbee. It’s a spaceship driven by none other than Chip and Dale. Pluto sees the chipmunks and goes doggie-berserk. He chases the tiny spaceship all over the galaxy, resulting in Mickey and Pluto getting stranded beyond Saturn.

With only 15 seconds left until his rocket jets back to Earth, Mickey decides to hop into a gravity well. He tosses a dog biscuit into the well and grabs onto Pluto’s leash. The dog leaps into the stream, dragging the two back to their ship in the nick of time.

The rocket lands back on Earth, as scheduled. Mickey and Pluto exit the ship, greeted by all of the appropriate fanfare from the press. This time, however, Mickey is the one that has to relieve himself and he rushes off to the outhouse.

I think this is probably one of my favorite episodes of the show. It has a very “old school” feeling to it. The Chip and Dale cameo was pretty awesome, as was the joke at Pluto-the-planet’s expense. I would love to see more episodes like this. The “new school” episodes always feel like they have to force the jokes. All of the jokes felt very natural here. Hopefully we will see more episodes along these lines in the future.
