Review: Fish Hooks ”The Big Woo”

Spoilers Below

Bea is JUST friends with Oscar…or so she thinks. It may be something more serious, and certainly her parents know for sure. Unfortunately, we’ve got bigger fish to fry as the kids at Freshwater High are getting ready to graduate and Milo wants to prank Baldwin GOOD.

Shellsea senses that something is wrong with Bea and soon figures out that Bea really does like Oscar. Not surprisingly, Shellsea is grossed out about the idea and convinces her pal to not go through with her crush. Later, Oscar falls asleep and starts dreaming about being in college and at first it looks like a great deal because everything’s different…including Bea. She comes equipped with five different boyfriends, but Oscar wants no part of being best friends with her. Instead, Oscar feels like if he wants something to change about their relationship, he’s gotta do it himself!

Milo wants to prank Baldwin, so he heads to a donkey salesman who happens to have the best prank donkey ever! Too bad it’s already been used leaving Milo with no good prank ideas for his teacher. It’s here Oscar tells Milo about his feelings with Bea, but he doesn’t think it’s a good idea. Mr. Muscles tells Bea that she should do what’s in her heart. Eventually, Bea and Oscar have a chit-chat about always being friends but Bea decides to talk to her parents just to be sure. Turns out that Bea’s mom and dad were friends before they got hitched, but they needed a ”Big Woo” to happen before they got closer. Bea hasn’t had that yet, so maybe it wasn’t just meant to be!  On the other hand, Oscar wants to tell Bea how he feels.

It’s time for graduation, and Randy has already pranked Baldwin leaving Milo to do something on his own. Oscar tells Bea how he feels, but she tells him he doesn’t feel the same and worse yet NOW she’s gotta make a graduation speech. At first it sounds like a normal speech, but eventually tells the whole class that she likes Oscar a lot. The kids graduate, and school’s out.

What you should know about Fish Hooks is that at least it ended the way it should have. A LOT of TV shows, animated or otherwise, don’t get the opportunity to end on high notes, but the fact that Disney let this one go out the way it was meant to be says a lot about the network so a kudos SHOULD go to them. Another shout out to guys like Justin Roiland (Oscar) and Alex Hirsch for developing one of the better TV shows the network has ever seen and to C.H. Greenblatt whom had to take the ball and run with it whilst working on the five other shows he has in development (seriously, he’s all over the place).

Fish Hooks had a respectable run of 110 episodes which is more than I would say 90 percent of animated shows that even get on TV. Efforts from the likes of Jonah Hill, Napoleon Dynamite, Danny McBride (twice) and others have faltered whilst this series was on and the last chapter that aired on Disney was proof that we are probably saying good bye to one of the best-written animated shows on television. Not even the mammoth that was Phineas and Ferb which had received WAY MORE support from Disney over the years is ending the way IT wants to.

What we should take away from the series is this…it helped launch the careers of a bunch of people that are doing more important TV shows now. Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) , Justin Roiland (Rick and Morty), and C.H. Greenblatt (Wander Over Yonder) are all working on their own TV shows, and rightfully so because every one of them are exceptionally talented and are important components for the future of animated television.

School’s out, ring a bell.
