Review: Bob’s Burgers ‘Topsy’
Spoilers Below
Mr. Dinkler is the new sub teacher for Louise’s science class and he gives the bunny-eared one a new assignment after he smashes her volcano. She must go to the library and do a research report on Thomas Edison. Whilst there, Louise learns that there was a elephant named ‘Topsy’ that Edison killed via electric shock. Louise thinks that if she can do this report it would devastate Dinkler and teach him a lesson. Eventually, Louise enlists her siblings, Gayle, Teddy, and Fischoeder to help but she nearly kills Tina which causes her older sister to hyper ventilate
Dinkler finds out about Louise’s project and he gets her thrown in the principal’s office subsequently banning her from the science fair. However, thanks to the librarian that suggested the elephant project to begin with, Louise escapes and gets her show on the road whilst Gene and Tina were doing their song and dance routine. Louise’s deal goes off, and again narrowly kills Tina, but everyone makes out OK, including Gayle and Fischoeder of whom are making out in the back.
The Belcher kids might be the official stars of this show, more so than Bob and Linda. There…I said it. For some reason the writers just feel like they have more fun writing for the trio and as a result all three have kinda been melded into this mold that just works. Louise is the leader of the pack, Tina is the awkward but supportive sister, and Gene of whom always seems to be bursting at the seams to stand out to his parents. This is on display this week, but now the writers add in Teddy, Gayle, and Calvin a recipe that looks to be headed for disaster, but instead they pull off a climax that helps the program soar up and over other animated shows. With that being the musical number as done by Louise’s cast and crew for her project we learn why this show is the cream of the crop on animated television. Even with the throwaway B-plot with Bob and Linda’s spice apparatus’, ‘Topsy’ is tops.
