Bubble UK Shorts Review: Doctor Lollipop Episode 1

It’s time for the latest in Cartoon Hangover’s 2013 shorts and this new ‘toon is purposefully designed to make you puke rainbows. Open wide and say arghh for Doctor Lollipop.

Doctor Lollipop

It has been a great Summer for Cartoon Hangover, their output of shorts has been prolific and diverse, from the ultra kawaii Bee and Puppycat to the raunchy randomness of Rocket Dog; there really has been something for everyone on Hangover’s YouTube channel this summer.

The idea of having an online animation “festival” of sorts  was a bold move for the Frederator run channel, one that has definitely paid off; personally as a fan of cartoons, I was pleased to be introduced to so many new animators and artists, to the point which  my bookmarks bar is now getting a bit full! Sure, there have been some dissenters, I saw a few comments after the likes of Ace Discovery in the vein of ” less of this and more Bravest Warriors” but if you are foolhardy enough to read the YouTube comments section, you are always going to see something like that, usually a lot worse. To my mind, those comments summed up the purpose of the festival, to show that Cartoon Hangover isn’t just about the brilliance of Pen Ward, there is plenty of other hot talent out there too.

On then to the latest presentation, Kelly Martin‘s Doctor Lollipop and as the description says: “Two words: Unicorn. Physician” This is the crux of the humour in Doctor Lollipop, he’s a magnificent beast, small girls will fall in love with him: but he wait, he’s no ordinary Unicorn, he’s a Doctor.

Beautifully muted patterned backgrounds tone down the saccharin flavour of this cute fest and this knowing look behind the scenes of forest life  squarely takes aim at recent  talking animal hits such as My Little Pony, whilst throwing appreciative nods toward Disney classics. Created and written by Kelly Martin, based on her comics of the same name and directed by Aliki Grafft, Doctor Lollipop will be a deserved hit for Cartoon Hangover, I loved it and hopefully you will too.

Let’s go deep into the woods then and watch as the good Doctor goes about his duties. Will things gets messy? Probably, he has hooves instead of hands after all, but you know this will be a totally adorable mess.

So many loving nods towards classic ‘toons, from Chuck Jones through Disney to today’s My Little Pony.BUT Dr Lollipop may well be a one trick pony, I doubt you could get a series out of this one “in” joke, even if it is a very good joke.

Brilliant art though.
