English Dub Review: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders “Justice, Part 1”

Time for justice.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

The episode starts off with Joseph explaining the situation to Anne about his daughter and Jotaro’s mother Holly facing mortal danger, and despite all her adventures with Team Joestar, Joseph finally convinces Anne to return back to her home in Hong Kong which leads to both a heartfelt scene as she yells to Jotaro that she’s rooting for him to save his mom. After arriving in Pakistan, Team Joestar travels by Jeep and as they get closer to their next destination, a mysterious fog begins to cover the terrain where Joseph suggests stopping at a nearby village in search of a Hotel until the fog passes.

As they ask around for a place to stay, the creepy atmosphere starts to elevate when the villagers themselves remain quietly emotionless and much to Polnareff’s horror, he notices a random corpse lying on the street covered with bloodless holes. And with nobody within the town even giving a shit about the corpse’s presence, there’s a genuine sense of unease to the proceedings. As Jotaro suspects this to be the handiwork of a Stand User, Joseph quickly notices their Jeep is suddenly missing. And it’s here that Enyaba appears before the group, claiming to be an innocent old lady who leads them to a nearby Hotel with Jotaro being the only one who notices something odd about her mentioning the name “Joestar”.

As Team Joestar checks into their rooms by signing their signatures, the smooth-talking cowboy, Hol Horse shows up after having tracked Team Joestar down to their location. Understandably, Enyaba isn’t too thrilled to see him given that Hol Horse indirectly got her son killed during their first encounter with Team Joestar and straight up shanks his wrist before displaying the devastating power of her “Justice” Stand which turns out to be the fog itself that controls Hol Horse’s arm like a contorted marionette forcing him to shoot himself with his own Emperor Stand. The episode cryptically ends when Enyaba uses the gunfire sound to get the attention of her next target and Centerfold’s killer, Polnareff.

Our Take

Aside from Anne’s heartfelt and presumably last appearance, The subtle moments of terror that builds-up in this episode is easily what kept me watching and Enyaba as a character is shown to be just as deranged & despicable as her unrepentant son. What also helps the dub is voice actress Barbara Goodson who gives off a menacingly sadistic performance which seems fitting to Enyaba’s character as Barbara often voices evil & powerful older women in the past with absolute ease (most notably, Rita Repulsa from Power Rangers). The functionality of her “Justice” Stand is quite disturbing and so far, since it only works if a person is directly wounded, it doesn’t exactly have a physical form. So the bigger question is, how will Team Joestar win against this one?

I guess we’ll find out next week with Part 2.
