English Dub Review: Undead Unluck “Profile”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Fuuko arrives at the day and time Andy mentioned, but she is met by Victor, who starts killing her across multiple points in Andy’s memories, hoping to destroy her soul. However, a memory of Andy defends her and faces Victor in combat, and with Fuuko’s help, they’re able to contain him. This is apparently all that is needed, as Victor’s goals were mainly to kill Juiz, whom he loved, to end her suffering, but he thinks Fuuko’s powers could be the edge they need to defeat god, so Fuuko is sent back to reality.

OUR TAKE

Well, I guess that answers what that big fight between Andy and Victor was supposed to be in the Opening. As I said, I expected that to be some Under related scheme that somehow separated the two physically so they could have a big ol fight to close this season out with a bang, but it ended up being literally all in Andy’s head. In fact, Under hasn’t really been a factor since they had their big coming out party a few episodes ago, though they seem to be coming back next episode, so better late than never. As for this episode, we do get SOME answers, or rather hints towards answers. In brief flashes, we see a time during his time with Union and Juiz when they were presumably a couple and she wished to reincarnate to be together with him, but then a scene where she is shown to be the one that put the card (it still looks like a hunk of glass to me) in Victor’s head that created the Andy personality. And yet, some mysteries about Victor and Andy’s life remain a mystery, so perhaps we’ll come back to this matter at another time.

I feel like it wouldn’t be entirely accurate to say that this was a battle for Andy’s soul, but rather a battle to see which personality gained dominance…somehow? As with any plot that takes place within someone’s mind (and it’s confirmed that this is just Andy’s mind and memories, not interfering with the actual timeline, thank god) the logistical rules are incredibly abstract and basically depend on feelings and imagination. So, if Victor says that he could kill Fuuko within that memory and then do it enough time that she’d disappear…would that actually work? I dunno, but it seems like they all really believe it. In essence, it seems like Victor in this space represents a cynicism about the battle the Union is facing and whether God can be defeated, while Andy is by no means cheery or naïve about it but still believes it can be defeated, though ironically Victor wants to live while Andy wants to die. That’s certainly an interesting dynamic between these two personalities and it’s good that they got to actually interact face to face for once, but now we gotta deal with UMA Autumn so we can end this season on some sort of satisfying note.
