English Dub Review: Undead Unluck “Memento Mori”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Using Anno Un’s artifact Soul Caliber, Fuuko’s soul leaves her body and enters Andy’s memories, or rather, his story. Starting sometime in the Old West, Fuuko meets Andy as a cowboy with a bunch of cohorts, and witnesses him discover his ability after seeing all of them die in front of him. She travels all over the world with him until he reveals his oldest memory, April 15, 1865, in Washington, D.C. Upon hearing this, Fuuko fades away, but not before telling him about their future meeting in 2020, awakening on the date and place Andy mentioned.

OUR TAKE

Well, that was pretty cool. But also, what the hell WAS that? Where did Fuuko GO, exactly? My first thought and assumption was that the books opening meant that she would be entering Andy’s MEMORIES, though mainly because another manga artist character, Rohan Kishibe, had a power to open people up into pages and affect their memories too. But the fact that they refer to it HERE as a STORY kinda implies it’s like going into their personal timeline? I think??? I guess we’ll determine which of the two it is if the timeline is affected at all…but then this is also a universe that has also had multiple timeloops, so would that matter either way? Did Andy find Fuuko in the first episode because she told him where to go here? Did Fuuko just cause a time paradox? I just…man, I don’t know how to process this. I mean, it’s neat and all, I’m still pretty interested in where it’s going, but I think things have finally gotten a bit too overcomplicated, which is SAYING SOMETHING with this story and all its magical nonsense. Again, we gotta wait to get some of this cleared up in the remaining three episodes of the season, but still.

But hey, wasn’t it neat to see Andy dressed up like a cowboy and hanging around the Old West? None of this really filled in any blanks about where he came from or when he decided he wanted to die, but it does at least, apparently, show when he discovered he had his power in the first place. That’s definitely a big part of the puzzle but honestly I was more interested in finding out how he split off from Victor, since that seems to be the diverging point where a lot of shit goes down. And perhaps we will, since this part of the story is all about uncovering previously unknown but significant points in Andy’s history. But how does turning him into pages with Autumn’s power do that, especially for points that he may not remember? Well, again, it may turn out these aren’t actually memories but ways to actually insert yourself into someone else’s timeline, which is already making my brain tee up for an aneurysm just trying to wrap my head around it. But yeah, three episodes left, still got one big skull spider to beat, followed by three other monsters for next season, so let’s get some shit done.
