Review: The Simpsons “Cremains Of The Day”

Overview

When someone in Homer’s life passes away, he and guys from Moe’s go on a road trip to scatter the ashes… but will their friendship die as well?

Our Take

Ah yes, drunken escapades with friends. In any event, it was super sad to see a classic character die…or does he? You may remember in classic episodes of The Simpsons entitled “Duffless” and “Moe Letter Blues”, both episodes feature TWO Larrys visible in the same shot, especially in “Duffless” as they both sit at Moe’s bar at the exact same time. So, for all we know, all of this hullabaloo over a dead Larry may be moot because there may be another Larry running around Springfield somewhere.

In any event, “Cremains of the Day” will probably go down as one of the sweeter episodes of The Simpsons’ 35th episodes but with important plot points that are just fascinating takes that we really haven’t seen the show take before. The guys pondering what happens when we die is rather profound complete with a tender original song from BFM’s Kara Talve really started to tug on the ol’ heartstrings there for me.

That’s not to say the episode didn’t have its giggles. Moe looking at sapphires through a bathroom dish is a hilarious sight to behold and Homer being blown away by the phrase “frunk” was excellent. We also got a quick Del Taco joke which can only be told by a bunch of writers that live in LA and I don’t know who this Bruno Wifebanger is but now I really want to meet him.

The only real slight I had was in the acting departments mainly from Lenny and Carl. I don’t know if it was mixing or what, but Lenny sounded very, very high-pitched this evening and as much as I love Alex Desert(his roles on Mr. Pickles/Momma Named Me Sheriff are legend), long spells of him as “Carl” has me yearn for the character just being killed off if Hank Azaria doesn’t want to reprise the role and having Alex develop a whole new character.

Overall a solid episode of The Simpsons as we go on another two week hiatus with no new episodes of the series until May 5th.
