Review: Krapopolis “Muse Your Illusion”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Krapopolis is wrought with Muses, little creatures that provide inspiration for out there ideas, so Tyrannis tries making use of them until it becomes an addiction. Meanwhile, Shlub goes through a routine metamorphosis, forcing Deliria to protect him from predators.

OUR TAKE

Wow, we’re at the nineteenth episode of the season, which makes this first season of Krapopolis longer than any other season for a Fox animated show this go around. And with three (maybe four) more to go! I guess that’s what happens when you force your writers and actors to go on an extended strike and only have pre-made episodes from your mediocre NFT show that was only made to lean into a gimmick that’s no longer in fashion. That’s right, I’m not gonna let that go, but in the meantime we should also probably discuss the episode itself. This week’s another not great one, with the whole idea for the main plot being centered around the idea that being inspired to do weird stuff is actually because of these tiny fairy things with ironically uncreative designs, with it then kinda turning into a drug addiction story but for…ideas? Yeah, this episode plot sure doesn’t sound like it was an idea gifted from the gods, if you’re catching my meaning. It’s just a really uninspired story idea that is just kinda mid, and very likely to be forgotten in the shuffle of this season overall, which is definitely saying something considering other episodes we’ve gotten.

The only real saving grace of the episode is, as it turns out, the B plot involving Shlub and Deliria. Shlub, being both a mythical creature and a further made up one at that, already had a lot of room to go a lot of different places with his uniquely weird and gross physiology, but I honestly never thought of the idea he might go through some weird molting process that would require constant protection. That’s already pretty interesting on its own, but what makes it legitimately compelling, at least relative to the rest of the episode, is that it gives him and Deliria a chance to flesh out their relationship, specifically the more wholesome and loving side. We see them act a lot like the more casual and sex-focused couple, much to their collective children’s disgust, but we’ve also gotten glimpses that they also genuinely care about each other, even if they don’t always have opportunities to show that or get into it. In this case, we have a situation where the usually strong Shlub is being basically going through a physical reset, losing hair, then body parts, and even his memory temporarily, forcing Deliria to kinda grapple with how much she actually cares about him once he loses all the surface level things she claims to be only into. But they’re not exactly going to make him a whole new model so he’s back to normal pretty quick, but the point is it’s wholesome! Anyway, this was the good part of the episode, see you next time for episode twenty.
