English Dub Review: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime “Demons and Strategies”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

While Rimiru continues to attend Walpurgis, Diablo and the group that left for Falmuth approach the kingdom’s royals with three options as consequence for their actions last season: pay reparations, become a vassal state, or be destroyed by Tempest, which will be the assumed answer if they give no answer in one week. But Diablo figures they’ll pick the reparations option, with the king being deposed anyway.

OUR TAKE

After the events of last season led to Rimiru ascending to Demon Lord, Veldora regaining physical form, and a shake up of the Ten Great Demon Lords decreasing to the Octagram, it makes sense that the beginning of the next season would start with a bit less action, as did the season before it. What I wasn’t expecting was to have the whole episode essentially be a political negotiation about the Kingdom of Falmuth officially bending the knee to Tempest through Diablo’s manipulation tactics. And I gotta say, as much as I would consider myself a fan of the more talky portions of Game of Thrones (pre-season 7 obviously), I honestly could not give less of a shit about the politics of Falmuth and how it’s inevitably going to give power over to one of Rimiru’s allies. There are so many fucking characters in this thing that I have lost track of easily a third of them and have zero interest in re-learning their names unless it is absolutely necessary.

But okay, here’s what seems to be the relevant bits here. Falmuth emerged as the most prominent human-based threat against Tempest and its growing power and influence, leading to that big invasion that happened last season that resulted in a bunch of people dying, including Shion. That death and subsequent resurrection annoys me so fucking much because we don’t even see her die, nor see her revive after Rimiru does it, and her character is entirely unchanged from beginning to end, which sucks because the entirety of her personality is Have Boobs, Like Rimiru, Be Strong, in that order. Anyway, Falmuth will soon be in Rimiru’s alliance, which seems to invite the further interference by the Western Holy Empire, as Hinata Sakaguchi is very prominent in the marketing and Opening and so will likely have a big role in things to come. Christ, there’s twenty three more of these? Okay, well, this thing’s gonna go until at least the beginning of October, so I guess I better get comfortable and ready for a long slimy trail. Who knows, maybe a miracle will happen and I’ll somehow end up liking this whole thing. Eh, doesn’t seem all that likely.
