English Dub Review: I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability “I Encountered an Adventurer”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

After making the Demon Grimoire his familiar, Lloyd sets out in pursuit of a dungeon with magically enchanted items and encounters Tao, a martial artist who uses Qi techniques. Lloyd, interested in the method, assumes the alter ego of Robert and heads deep into a dungeon with her.

Our Take:

Lloyd’s quest to study magic began with him gaining a familiar in the form of Grimoire. However, this demon is far from friendly, given his attempt to rain down destruction upon the kingdom that imprisoned him in the first place. But in this week’s episode, we learned that Grim won’t be the only friend he gains. “I Encountered an Adventurer” continues Lloyd’s perseverance to discover more powerful magic in its first half, which sees him participating in target practice with his big brother Albert. However, it turns out that he always performs stronger spells without drawing too much attention to himself. One of the spells he performs with Grimoire is spell stacking, which allows him to cast multiple spells at once. Unfortunately, he created a hole in the atmosphere in the process.

The second half then has Lloyd embarking on a quest to find a dungeon while Grim and Lloyd’s wooden replica take his place. There, he meets Tao, whose martial arts skills are seemingly as strong as Lloyd’s magic. Disguised as an older adventurer named Robert, Lloyd joins Tao on a dungeon quest that pits them against the boss guarding the treasure. However, Lloyd’s disguise, which combines himself with an image of Albert, may have worked too well, as Tao became highly affectionate toward “Robert”. This might be an awkward conversation for them to have when she finds out who “Robert” really is.

In short, we have another basic dungeon-crawling episode that showcases more of Lloyd’s OP moments and a new ally joining the fun. But it also shows more of Lloyd’s gullible personality taking shape, as he’s still unaware of Grim’s secret plot to take over the prince’s body. If this is his only personality we’re enduring for the remaining episodes, then I’m unsure he’ll be able to carry the rest of the series. On the bright side, though, the episode doesn’t showcase Lloyd’s bare legs like the previous one, and the chibi shorts amid its plot are admittedly cute. Besides that, I’m still not impressed with how things progress in this formulaic isekai venture.
